My go-to place in Xuhui district
They are my go-to hotel in Xuhui district for a few reasons: (1) hotel is clean and easily accessible via metro (Guilin Road), (2) never had a problem to get a non-smoking room (as sometimes it is an issue in China), (3) a lot of rooms have a very, VERY deep bathtub in which it is possible to be completely immersed, (4) the training room is decently equipped, even if I would hope for a bench press or a Smith machine somewhere, and (5) restaurants, if not immediately next door, are within 10 minutes walking distance. Some of the rooms I went in start showing their age, but still in quite an acceptable shape. Service so far has been decent as well. So, a keeper.

Good for China
I stayed in other hotels on my trip to china and this was hands down the best. Room was clean and had lots of extras. Snacks, bidet, water, milk, all included at no cost in the room. Most importantly room seemed to be clean!!! Staff spoke some english, my visa worked to pay for the hotel which it had not at other hotels. Next door to subway and in a nice enough neighborhood, highly recommended.

Great location
Large room, well decorated. It is really close to a subway station. There was complimentary fruit, a bowl of noodles, and bottles of water in the room. The lobby is beautiful and has many comfortable places to sit. Only downside is that you have to walk a short way for stores or other restaurants. Very nice place, I would stay again.

Great comfortable hotel, perfect location.
I was in Shanghai for a week on business. The location is very convenient. 5 min. walk to train station. 5 min walk to tons of restaurants/stores/cafes. Hotel was very clean, well kept. They offered snacks/drinks free of charge in the room everyday (cookies, fruit, chips) which was a nice surprise to see a hotel include these minor items. Overall, great stay, would def stay again.

San Want Hotel
This was our fifth stay at the San Want Hotel.this hotel is situated very close to my sister in law also it is close to the shanghai metro on Line 9.: We had a superior room which is about 68 square metres in size. Well worth paying for the extra space as it is double the size of a standard room.Food not so good for Westerners. Caters more for Orientals.

Hotel staffs need more tarining
Front desk staff refused to loan me an umbrella and requested a deposit despite for a registered guest. Staff claimed that this is the hotel policy. I returned to them that was an unreasonable policy. After my argument, one staff member finally called her supervisor and agreed to loan me one but won't give it to me at the front desk. Instead I have to go back to the hotel room and wait for the delivery. Te lobby coffee area was very poorly designed and the design and chairs are the cheapest standard. The staff were not helpful as they push and hurry you to make an order while I was greeting my clients at the lobby. I definitely not to use this hotel lobby to meet clients because of its cheap design and untrained staff.

poor night shift management and security issue
Hotel location is great and just one min. Out of subway line 9. Very convenient to connect to other lines. However, the cafe area in the lobby is very poorly designed and equipped. The table and chairs are so cheap but the beverage price is about the 5 start standard. The cafe area is very small and the furniture are very cheap. Not suitable for business meeting in the area as not business presentable. The security is also poor as the mid night shift staff often slept at the front desk and don't even bothered to wake up when there had visitor entered. The hotel guest elevators are right behind the counter and all visitor must go through the night shift staff before entering the hotel rooms. No room key is required to go in the guest elevator. non-smoking is the policy but the nigh shift staff even allow the standby taxi driver to smoke in the lobby. The management shall make some improvements on the night shift isues.

Hard for westerners
Looks like a nice hotel of you speak Chinese. If you only speak English it's very difficult to communicate with room service, laundry service / house keeping, restaurant or concierge. I will definitely choose an international hotel chain next time. It certainly isn't San wants fault I can't speak Chinese, but the reality is it isn't a hotel for non-Chinese speakers.

The art of feeling welcomed
I make a point to stop at that hotel whenever I am in Shanghai. I arrived there pretty late. Guy at the desk treated my reservation pretty fast. Insisted to have a non-smoking room. Done! Oh, and an upgrade too. Do you need a credit card for incidentals/all. Nope! Guess I was there plenty of times. Also appreciated: I speak Chinese, even if I am not even Asian. I always appreciate their willingness to speak to me in their language. From hearing them speaking with other clients, I know their English is pretty good. Still, appreciate the practice and the respect. Much better than some of the other Shanghai place, which can be pretty snobby language-wise. They have "o-furo" Japanese style baths, pretty relaxing. All stuff in the minibar are free, mainly snacks and juices. But then I had the (pleasant) surprise to find a bottle of umeishu (Japanese plum wine). Free of charge too apparently. Might have set them back a few dollars, but you know what? If they wanted to have me come back, it did accomplish its goal! They also have a bar downstairs that looks pretty good. Didn't patronize it though, or the restaurant. The hotel itself is a bit off the beaten paths. But only a bit. Take the metro to Guilin road, line 9, which is now going straight to Pudong (the area, not the airport) in about 20 minutes. Make sure you go UP Yishan road (got lost this way!) when you come out of the metro station. In front of the hotel, there is a convenience store, I think there is one at the metro station too. Hotel is bright golden color with the face of a fatty boy on it.

Great Value
For the special price I booked this hotel, it was an excellent value. It was very convenient to Shanghai Normal University where I was lecturing. Otherwise, it is not the most convenient place but very close to subway line (line 9). What sets this apart is the beds, which as anyone who has been in China knows, are usually rock hard. That is NOT the case with this hotel. The beds are firm but actually comfortable. The rooms are clean and nice. Fantastic value. And stuff in the mini-bar is all free--although it's from the owner of the hotel which is a snack and beverage company with a very unappealing logo which adorns the side of this Orange colored hotel

Great Value for the Service and Comfort
Visiting a conference at the Everbright Exhibition Center and after reviewing the customer reviews for the other hotels locally decided on the San Want. I was very happy with my choice compared to other hotels I visited while there. Positives - Very attentive and helpful staff. Clean hotel and rooms. Free internet (via Cable). Good selection at buffet. Taxi's knew of Hotel and no problem getting there. Surrounding area appeared safe. Minor Cons - About 1 km from Conference centre, I walked each way (flat easy walk and past shops / restaurants). Restaurant staff are a bit over zealous and keen. Each day in the buffet each time I went back to the counter for desert of coffee when I returned to my seat the table had been cleared, cleaned and had new occupants seated. I then had to wait to be seated at another table. This is the fastest cleaning away of plates etc I have ever seen. Also when selecting food at the buffet I had a chef dash out of the Kitchen to tell me Chinese do not mix these items on my plate and then scrapped off the food. Great they want to share the correct way to enjoy their food - just over keen. All in all a good stay and the only cons were really they were trying too hard.

Far from tourist spots
Location is little far from tourist spots therefore, if you're foreign tourist, you may want to find different accomadation. Hotel itself is fine, however, guess room smell is not very pleasant. Room size is good. 5 minutes walk from subway station. It's a business hotel for local. If you speak Chinese, there're some good dining choices nearby without English menu.

Your home in Shanghai
I discovered San Want a year or so ago, and if I need to visit Shanghai around the Hongqiao airport location, I definitely go there each and every time. Price is very reasonable, the hotel is very well maintained, and the location is really close to metro. Service is very good too. Contrary to some other Shanghainese locations, they don't insist to speak English to you when you can do Chinese, which is a proof of respect in my opinion. But I heard them speaking with other customers, their English is fine. They are international-grade, efficient, yet not arrogant (another problem at some other Shanghai locations). Some of their rooms have the Japanese funny bath - always a favorite of mine. Snacks are free, so is the Internet (at least when booking through Hotels.com). In the area, there isn't much in terms of restaurants, but if you go up Guilin Road (in front of San Want hotel), and go two or three blocks down, you will find a few restaurants, some very basic (if you like shish kebabs, basic will do just fine), some more refined, but all have cheap beer. The hotel also has a bar - never patronized it though, I like the street food a bit too much ;) There is a 24-hour convenience store on that road very close to the hotel, in case you want something above and beyond snacks (which are free, didn't I say this?). Two thumbs up!

Very Pleasant Surprise
I have lived off and on in China for over 25 years and traveled everywhere staying in many different types of hotels. This strangely-named hotel gets high marks for a rare find: a comfortable bed in a Chinese hotel. Almost impossible to find. Most hotel beds are just like sleeping on the floor. Not so here. The rooms are big, clean and nice. HBO and CNN at a very reasonably priced 4 Star (Chinese rating) is impressive. Service is standard for domestic hotels which are not part of an international chain. Breakfast surprisingly decent. In all, this hotel surpassed my expectations and I just booked it again.
