10/10 Exceptional

I took my brother to Japan, and I wanted him to experience a traditional "ryokan", and even though the IROHA Hotel has "hotel" in the name, it is very much a ryokan with tatami floors in the rooms, shoji and fusuma doors, and you sleep on futons. There is a communal bath in the hotel in addition to the "unit baths" (with commode, sink, and shower/bath) in the rooms. They serve a traditional Japanese breakfast with rice, miso soup, pickles, grilled fish, simmered soybeans and hijiki (seaweed), shredded cabbage, with an egg and some bacon- very much the gohan (rice) okazu (variety of different foods). The IROHA is right across the street from Nikko Toshogu, one of the big tourist destinations in Nikko so the location is great. The big drawback of the IROHA is its age. It looks like it was built in the 1970's and has not been updated since then. It is very clean but old- faded carpet, dated wall coverings. This is likely why it is fairly inexpensive relative to other properties around it. A big highlight of check-in was the woman at reception. She wore a very attractive kimono, which I complimented, and she let me know her mother made it, which was also impressive. If you can get past the age of the hotel, it is possible to get a glimpse of traditional Japan, which is well worth it in my opinion. (Note also we had a minor medical emergency while staying at the IROHA, and they jumped into action to help.)

The hotel has a very nice view of the mountains and river, and is very close to the temples and trail. The public bathhouse is a very typical Japanese experience.

2/10 Poor

This is the worst hotel I have stayed in in Japan. The lift was out of order and there was no internet available despite free wifi being advertised. Carrying luggage to the third floor was quite a challenge. The staff kept making excuses but no apologies. Very poor value for money and very unprofessional approach to service. Over priced

Little hotel a little bit far away from everything. The wifi was not working in my room and the whole room seems a little bit old and old fashioned. Still charming though. The hotel is a little bit afar from the bus station and their a just few restaurants around and they close early . Luckily a conviennent store was 5 min away. The lake of Nikko is 45 min away in bus . Not 10 minute . I think they need to improve the quality of the mattress they put in the room they are too thin and it can be a problem for people who got back pain . The staff is charming , nice and speak English , they were adorable. The bath is also quiet and clean and it was a nice experience. I can just advice you to skip the terrible breakfast they gave you . Really. Don't eat that . My experience was bittersweet I was expecting better but it was still not bad . Maybe a little bit costy for the overall package
