McCarthy is a very unique experience- a step back in time. Very clean and quiet. The Salmon and bear restaurant for breakfast was excellent. Their dinner menu is top notch.

Norman, 2-night trip

8/10 Very good

This is a very well maintained and renovated historic hotel with bathrooms down the hall. Breakfast was across the street at the 'saloon'. Good food and activities but be prepared to be close to nature.

If you want to see Wrangell St Elias NP this is the place to stay. The town is old school but fun and quirky. Not much to it though so dont go expecting a lot. Very good food in town. Shuttle makes things easy. Getting to McCarthy is a challenge but Im glad we did it.

End of the season stay

Ma Johnson's is the classic vintage small town hotel. The decor reflected the town's history and each room was decorated accordingly. They were upfront about things like a shared bathroom and no outlets in the rooms. It was a little cold upstairs since that floor does not have heaters in the rooms but they gave us extra blankets. For us, these things were issues and it was fun to socialize w/the other guests while charging up our electronics. The WiFi worked great as did the transportation. Everyone was helpful and it was easy to get around town. The breakfast was outstanding!

We tried to stay at the Kenicott Lodge and are so glad it was full! Thats when we found Ma Johnson's Hotel! Absolutely fantastic!! It was like stepping into a time warp and going back in time. And McCarthy is not to be missed! What a cool little town. We stayed 3 nights at Ma's and enjoyed every minute. We were able to walk to a glacier, took the mine tour and went flightseeing, all of which Irecommend highly!! Add this to your Alaskan vacation plans!!
This is the room we had. It was like going to a movie set. These are all pictures of the hotel.
Barbara, 3-night trip

10/10 Exceptional

This is an iconic landmark with historic charm. Sharing bathroom was no big deal since everyone was so nice and became like family. No elevator but there are first floor rooms. Copper Balley shuttle was so convenient!
Patricia, 3-night trip

We loved staying at Ma’s. It was great to have all the dogs in and out. So fun. McCarthy is a unique community in an awesome area. We had such a lovely time. Thank you 😊
Susan, 2-night trip

8/10 Very good

The hotel staff were great and helpful. The hotel is a historic hotel so the room just has a bed and sink. Bathrooms are shared and down the hall. Hotel is in the middle of McCarthy.
Jayden, 2-night trip

Loved the old time charm of the hotel. It was exactly as advertised. Neil and Emily were more than accommodating.
Mildred, 2-night trip

10/10 Exceptional

Emily drove the shuttle, gave great advice on what to see, worked the front desk and did the laundry. They ran an extension cord for our CPAPs and the lobby was a cozy place to charge your phone and chat with other travelers. They went over and above to take care of us.

Carl, 2-night trip

10/10 Exceptional

The Hotel was located in the center of town. Easy to just walk across the street to dine. Very friendly staff. Would be nice to have battery operated clock. Other than that it was a great experience.
Aaron, 2-night trip

Private bathroom and A/C would make the stay better
Maria, 2-night trip

We liked it.. kind of noisy first night due to kids close, but we understood that..
Linda, 2-night trip

10/10 Exceptional

Ma Johnson's is a remarkable, historic hotel. Great staff. Rooms are simple, but very comfortable. The hotel is centrally located in the dynamic mountain town of McCarthy. Eating the included breakfast at the Salmon and Bear restaurant across the street is a real treat.
